Sanskrit Class 9- Chapter 4- सूक्तिमौक्तिकम्- Hindi Translation & English Translation 2023-24

प्रस्तुतोऽयं पाठ: नैतिकशिक्षाणां प्रदायकरूपेण वर्तते। अस्मिन् पाठांशे विविधग्रन्थेभ्यः सङ्ग्रहणं कृत्वा नानानैतिकशिक्षाबोधकपद्यानि गृहीतानि सन्ति। अत्र सदाचरणस्य महिमा, प्रियवाण्याः आवश्यकता, परोपकारिणां स्वभाव:, गुणाज्जनस्य प्रेरणा, मित्रताया: स्वरूपम्, श्रेष्ठसङ्गते: प्रशंसा तथा च सत्सङ्गतेः प्रभाव: इत्यादीनां विषयाणां निरूपणम् अस्ति। संस्कृतसाहित्ये नीतिग्रन्थानां समृद्धा परम्परा दृश्यते। तत्र प्रतिपादितशिक्षाणाम् अनुगमनं कृत्वा जीवनसाफल्यं कर्तुं शक्नुमः।

Hindi Translation: यह प्रस्तुत पाठ नैतिक शिक्षा की प्रदायक रूप से दिया गया है। इस पाठ में विविध ग्रन्थों से (जानकारियाँ) जुटा कर बहुत सारे नैतिक शिक्षा बोधक कहानियाँ ली गयी हैं। यहाँ सदाचरण की महिमा, प्रिय वाणी की आवश्यकता, परोपकारों का स्वभाव, गुणी लोगों का प्रेरणा, मित्रता का स्वरूप, अच्छी दोस्ती की प्रशंसा तथा सत्सङ्ग के प्रभाव इत्यादि विषयों का निरूपण है। संस्कृत साहित्य में नीति ग्रन्थों का बहुत परम्परा देखा जाता है। वहाँ प्रतिपादित शिक्षा का अनुगमन करके जीवन सफल करने के लिए प्रयास करना चाहिए।

English Translation: This lesson is being delivered in the form of moral education. Many moral educative stories have been taken from various books and used in this lesson. Appreciation of good behaviour, the need for sweet speech, the nature of charity, the inspiration of virtuous people, the nature of friendship, the appreciation of good friendship, and the effect of Satsang are all discussed here. Sanskrit literature contains a rich tradition of policy texts. One should strive for success in life by following the education taught there.

वृत्तं यत्नेन संरक्षेद् वित्तमेति च याति च।
अक्षीणो वित्ततः क्षीणो वृत्ततस्तु हतो हत:।। 1 ।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: ‘आचार-व्यवहार’ को कोशिश के द्वारा रक्षा करनी चाहिए, धन-दौलत आता है और जाता है (परन्तु) धन से क्षीण, क्षीण नहीं है (बल्कि) अचार-व्यवहार (चरित्र) से क्षीण मारा हुआ (के समान) हो जाता है।

English Translation: Ethics must be protected by effort. Wealth comes and goes, but the weak in wealth is not weak, but weak in character akin to a slain.

श्रूयतां धर्मसर्वस्वं श्रुत्वा चैवावधार्यताम् ।
आत्मन: प्रतिकूलानि परेषां न समाचरेत्। ।।2।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: धर्म का सारांश सुनिए और सुनकर ही ग्रहण कीजिए। (जो) अपने प्रतिकूल हो (वो) व्यवहार दूसरों के साथ भी नहीं करना चाहिए।

English Translation: Listen to the essence of righteousness and accept it only after hearing it. The behavior which is unfavorable to oneself should not be done to others also.

प्रियवाक्यप्रदानेन सर्वे तुष्यन्ति जन्तव:।
तस्माद् तदेव वक्तव्यं वचने का दरिद्रता।।3।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: मधुर बात बोलने से सभी लोग खुश होते हैं इसीलिए वह ही (मधुर/प्रिय) बोलना चाहिए। (मधुर) बोलने में क्या कंजूसी?

English Translation: Speaking pleasantly makes everyone happy, thus it is advisable to do so. What’s wrong with using a pleasant voice?

पिबन्ति नद्य: स्वयमेव नाम्भ:
स्वयं न खादन्ति फलानि वृक्षा:।

नादन्ति सस्यं खलु वारिवाहा:
परोपकाराय सतां विभूतय:।। 4 ।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: नदियाँ खुद ही पानी नहीं पीती, पेड़ खुद ही फल नहीं खाते, निश्चय ही बादल (भी) पैदावार (फसल) खुद नहीं खाता (क्योंकि), अच्छे लोगों की सम्पत्तियाँ (धन-वैभव) दूसरों के परोपकार के लिए होती हैं।

English Translation: The rivers themselves do not drink water, the trees themselves do not bear fruit, the clouds themselves certainly do not eat the crops because the wealth of good people is for the benevolence of others.

गुणेष्वेव हि कर्तव्यः प्रयत्न: पुरुषैः सदा।
गुणयुक्तो दरिद्रोऽपि नेश्वरैरगुणैः समः॥ 5॥

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: निश्चित रूप से लोगों को हमेशा संस्कारों/गुणों में (रहने की) ही कोशिश करना चाहिए (क्योंकि) गुणहीन अमीर भी, गुणयुक्त दरिद्र (गरीब) के बराबर नहीं होता (है)।

English Translation: A poor person with good values is far more better than a rich person who has no values. That’s why we should never lose our values.

आरम्भगुर्वी क्षयिणी क्रमेण
लघ्वी पुरा वृद्धिमती च पश्चात् ।
दिनस्य पूर्वार्द्धपरार्द्धभिन्ना
छायेव मैत्री खलसज्जनानाम्।।6।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: धूर्त लोगों की दोस्ती “मध्याह्न के पहले” (दोपहर 12.00 noon के पहले अर्थात “पूर्वार्द्ध“) के छाया के सामान है – शुरू में विशाल और बाद में तुरंत कम (छोटी) होने वाली होती है। जबकि अच्छे लोगों की मित्रता, “दोपहर के बाद”(परार्द्ध) के छाया के समान शुरू में छोटी और बाद में बढ़ने वाली होती है।

English Translation: The friendship of sly people is like a shadow before the noon (12.00 noon). Initially huge and then immediately getting smaller. Whereas the friendship of good people is like a shadow after noon, initially short and later growing.

यत्रापि कुत्रापि गता भवेयु-
र्हंसा महीमण्डलमण्डनाय।
हानिस्तु तेषां हि सरोवराणां
येषां मरालैः सह विप्रयोग:।।7।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: धरती को सुशोभित करने के लिए हंस जहाँ कहीं भी जाएं, निश्चित रूप से उन सरोवरों को तो हानि ही है, जिनका हंसो से वियोग होना हो।

English Translation: Wherever the swans go to adorn the earth, it is certainly a loss to those lakes which have to be disconnected from the swans.

गुणा गुणज्ञेषु गुणा भवन्ति
ते निर्गुणं प्राप्य भवन्ति दोषाः ।
आस्वाद्यतोया: प्रवहन्ति नद्यः
समुद्रमासाद्य भवन्त्यपेयाः।।8।।

Hindi Translation/ सरलार्थ: गुणों को जानने वालों में गुण (values), गुण होते हैं। वे (गुण) निर्गुण को पाकर, दोष हो जाते हैं। (जैसे) स्वादिष्ट जल वाली नदियाँ बहती हैं, समुद्र में मिलकर (वही नदियाँ) अपेय (undrinkable) हो जाती हैं।

English Translation: Qualities become distinctive traits in those who know the qualities. The same qualities combined with viciousness become faults. Just as rivers of delicious water flow, the same rivers become undrinkable when they join the ocean.
