पुरा एकस्मिन् वृक्षे एका चटका प्रतिवसति स्म। कालेन तस्याः सन्ततिः जाता। एकदा कश्चित् प्रमत्तः गजः तस्य वृक्षस्य अधः आगत्य तस्य शाखां शुण्डेन अत्रोटयत्। चटकायाः नीडं भुवि अपतत्। तेन अण्डानि विशीर्णानि। अथ सा चटका व्यलपत्। तस्याः विलापं श्रुत्वा काष्ठकूटः नाम खगः दु:खेन ताम् अपृच्छत्-‘भद्रे, किमर्थं विलपसि?” इति। चटकावदत्-“दुष्टेनैकेन गजेन मम सन्ततिः नाशिता।

Hindi Translation:

प्राचीन समय में एक पेड़ पर एक चिड़िया रहती थी। समय के साथ उसके बच्चे हुए। एक बार कोई मस्त हाथी उस पेड़ के नीचे आकर उसके टहनी को सूढ़ से तोड़ दिया। चिड़िया का घोंसला जमीन पर गिर गया। उसके अण्डे फूट गए। इसलिए वह चिड़िया रोने लगी। उसका विलाप सुनकर ‘काष्ठकूट’ (कठफोड़वा) नाम के पक्षी ने दुःख के साथ उससे पूछा – “देवी, किसलिए रो रही हो?” चिड़िया ने कहा “एक दुष्ट हाथी के द्वारा मेरे सन्तानों को मार डाला गया”।

English Translation:

In ancient times, a bird lived on a tree. In time she had children. Once an intoxicated elephant came under that tree and broke its branch with its trunk. The bird’s nest fell to the ground. Her eggs were broken. So that bird started crying. Hearing her lamentation, a bird named ‘Kashtakoot’ (woodpecker) asked her with sorrow – “Devi, why are you crying?” The bird said, “my children have been killed by a wicked elephant”.

तस्य गजस्य वधेनैव मम दु:खम् अपसरेत्।’ ततः काष्ठकूट: तां वीणारवा-नाम्न्याः मक्षिकायाः समीपम् अनयत्। तयोः वार्ता श्रुत्वा मक्षिकावदत्-“ममापि मित्रं मण्डूकः मेघनादः अस्ति। शीघ्रं तमुपेत्य यथोचितं करिष्यामः।” तदानीं तौ मक्षिकया सह गत्वा मेघनादस्य पुरः सर्वं वृत्तान्तं न्यवेदयताम्।

Hindi Translation:

उस हाथी के मृत्यु से ही मेरा दु:ख दूर हो होगा। तब काष्ठकूट उसे वीनारवा नामक मक्खी के समीप ले गया। उन दोनों के वार्ता सुनकर मक्खी बोली – “मेरा भी एक दोस्त मेढ़क मेघनाद है। शीघ्र उसके पास चलकर जो उचित होगा (वो) करेंगे। तब वे दोनों (चिड़िया और काष्ठकूट) मक्खी के साथ जाकर मेधनाद के सामने सारा वृत्तान्त कह सुनाया।

English Translation:

Only by killing that elephant would my sorrow go away. Then Kashtakoot (woodpecker) took her near a fly named Veenarva. Hearing the conversation between both of them, the fly said – “I also have a friend, the frog ‘Meghnad’. Let’s go to him soon, will do whatever is appropriate. Then both of them (the bird and the woodpecker) went along with the fly and told the whole story in front of Medhnad.

मेघनादः अवदत्- “यथाहं कथयामि तथा कुरुतम्। मक्षिके! प्रथमं त्वं मध्याह्ने तस्य गजस्य कर्णे शब्दं कुरु, येन सः नयने निमील्य स्थास्यति। तदा काष्ठकूटः चञ्च्वा तस्य नयने स्फोटयिष्यति। एवं सः गजः अन्धः भविष्यति। तृषार्तः सः जलाशयं गमिष्यति। मार्गे महान् गत: अस्ति।

Hindi Translation:

मेघनाद ने कहा -“जैसा मैं कहता हूं वैसा करो। हे मक्खी! सबसे पहले तुम दोपहर में उस हाथी के कान में आवाज (भिन्न-भिन्न की धवनि) करो, इससे वह दोनों आँखे बंद करके रुक जाएगा। तब काष्ठकूट (कठफोड़वा) चोंच के द्वारा उसके दोनों आँखें फोड़ देगा। इस तरह वह हाथी अंधा हो जाएगा। प्यासा वह (हाथी) जलाशय को जाएगा। रास्ते में (एक) बहुत बड़ा गड्ढा है।

English Translation:

Meghnad said – “Do as I say. O fly! First of all, you make noise in the ear of that elephant, with this, he will stop by closing both eyes. Then the Kashtakoot (woodpecker) will gouge out both his eyes with the help of his beak. In this way, that elephant will become blind. The thirsty elephant will go to the reservoir. There is a big pothole in the way.

अन्तिके अहं स्थास्यामि शब्दं च करिष्यामि। मम शब्देन तं गर्तं जलाशयं मत्वा स तस्मिन्नेव गर्ते पतिष्यति मरिष्यति च।” अथ तथा कृते सः गजः मध्याह्ने मण्डूकस्य शब्दम् अनुसृत्य महतः गर्तस्य अन्तः पतितः मृतः च। तथा चोक्तम्- ‘बहूनामप्यसाराणां समवायो हि दुर्जयः’।

Hindi Translation:

(गड्ढे के) पास में मैं खड़ा रहूँगा और (टर्र-टर्र की) आवाज करूँगा। मेरे आवाज से (वह) उस गड्ढे को तालाब समझकर वह उस गड्ढे में ही गिर जाएगा और मर जाएगा। इस प्रकार वैसा करने पर वह हाथी दोपहर में मेढ़क की आवाज को अनुगमन करके बड़े गड्ढे के अंदर गिर जाता है और मर जाता है। और वैसे (भी) कहा गया है – अनेक निर्बल (छोटे प्राणियों) का संगठन भी मुश्किल से ही जीतने योग्य होता है। अर्थात् अनेक निर्बल का संगठन दुर्जेय/अजेय हो जाता हैं। (एकता में बल है।)

English Translation:

I will stand near (the pit) and make a sound (tarr-tarr). By my voice, he will fall into that pit thinking it to be a pond, and die. Thus doing so, the elephant falls into the big pit and dies following the sound of the frog in the afternoon. And anyway it has been said – even a group of many weak creatures is hardly winnable. That is, the organization of many weak becomes formidable/invincible. (There is strength in unity.)
