[प्रस्तुत पाठ अनुपम मिश्र की कृति ‘आज भी खरे हैं तालाब के संसार सागर के नायक‘ नामक अध्याय से लिया गया है। इसमें विलुप्त होते जा रहे पारम्परिक ज्ञान, कौशल एवं शिल्प के धनी गजधर के सम्बन्ध में चर्चा की गयी है । पानी के लिए मानव निर्मित तालाब, बावडी जैसे निर्माणों को लेखक ने यहाँ संसार सागर के रूप में चित्रित किया है ।]

के आसन् ते अज्ञातनामान:? शतशः सहस्रश: तडागाः सहसैव शून्यात् न प्रकटीभूता:। इमे एव तडागाः अत्र संसारसागराः इति। एतेषाम् आयोजनस्य नेपथ्ये निर्मापयितृणाम् एककम्, निर्मातृणां च दशकम् आसीत्।
Hindi Translation: कौन थे वो अनजान नाम:? सैकड़ों हजारों तालाब अचानक ही शून्य से प्रकट नहीं हुए हैं। ये ही तालाब यहाँ संसार के सागर हैं। इन आयोजनों के पीछे बनवाने वालों की इकाई और बनाने वालों की दहाई थीं।
English Translation: Who were those unknown names:? Hundreds of thousands of ponds have not suddenly appeared from nowhere. Here, these ponds are the oceans of the world. Behind these events were the units of the builders and the tens of those who built them.
एतत् एककं दशकं च आहत्य शतकं सहस्रं वा रचयत: स्म। परं विगतेषु द्विशतवर्षेषु नूतनपद्धत्या समाजेन यत्किञ्चित् पठितम्। पठितेन तेन समाजेन एककं दशकं सहस्रकञ्च इत्येतानि शून्ये एव परिवर्तितानि। अस्य नूतनसमाजस्य मनसि इयमपि जिज्ञासा नैव उद्भूता यद् अस्मात्पूर्वम् एतावतः तडागान् के रचयन्ति स्म।
Hindi Translation: ये इकाई और दहाई मिलकर सैकड़ों और हज़ारों को बनाते थे। लेकिन विगत दो सौ सालों में नई पद्धिति से समाज के द्वारा जो कुछ भी पढ़ा है, पढ़े हुए उस समाज के द्वारा इकाई और दहाई ये सब शून्य में ही बदल गए हैं। इस नए समाज के मन में यह भी जिज्ञासा नहीं उद्भूत हुई कि हमसे पूर्व इन तालाबों को किसने बनाये थे।
English Translation: These units and tens together made hundreds and thousands. But in the last two hundred years, whatever has been studied by society through the new method, all these units and tens have been turned into zero by that society. The curiosity did not even arise in the minds of this new society as to who had made these ponds before us.
एतादृशानि कार्याणि कर्तुं ज्ञानस्य यो नूतनः प्रविधि: विकसितः, तेन प्रविधिनाऽपि पूर्वं सम्पादितम् एतत्कार्यं मापयितुं न केनापि प्रयतितम्। अद्य ये अज्ञातनामानः वर्तन्ते, पुरा ते बहुप्रथिता: आसन्। अशेषे हि देशे तडागाः निर्मीयन्ते स्म, निर्मातारोऽपि अशेषे देशे निवसन्ति स्म।
Hindi Translation: ऐसे कार्यों को करने के लिए ज्ञान की जो नई तकनीक विकसित हुई है, उन तकनीकों से भी पहले सम्पादित हुए इन कार्यों को मापने के लिए किसी के द्वारा भी प्रयास नहीं किया गया। आज ये अज्ञात नाम वाले हैं, बहुत पहले वो बहुत प्रसिद्ध थे। पूरे देश में ही तालाब बनाये जाते थे, बनाने वाले भी पूरे देश में रहते थे।
English Translation: The new techniques of knowledge that have been developed to perform such tasks, no one has tried to measure these tasks performed before those techniques. Today they are of unknown name, they were very famous long ago. Ponds were made all over the country, and the people who made the ponds also lived all over the country.
गजधर: इति सुन्दरः शब्दः तडागनिर्मातृणां सादरं स्मरणार्थम्। राजस्थानस्य केषुचिद् भागेषु शब्दोऽयम् अद्यापि प्रचलति। क: गजधर:? य: गजपरिमाणं धारयति स गजधर:। गजपरिमाणम् एव मापनकार्ये उपयुज्यते। समाजे त्रिहस्त- परिमाणात्मिकीं लौहयष्टिं हस्ते गृहीत्वा चलन्त: गजधराः इदानीं शिल्पिरूपेण नैव समादृता: सन्ति। गजधरः, य: समाजस्य गाम्भीर्यं मापयेत् इत्यस्मिन् रूपे परिचित:।
Hindi Translation: गजाधर यह एक सुंदर शब्द तालाब बनाने वालों के आदरपूर्वक स्मरण के लिए है। राजस्थान के कुछ हिस्सों में यह शब्द आज भी प्रचलित है। कौन (है) गजधर? जो गज़ के परिमाण (मापन) को धारण करता है, वह गजधर है। गज का माण ही मापन कार्य में उपयोग होता है। समाज में तीन हाथ के नाप की लोहे की छड़ हाथ में लेकर चलते हुए गजधर अब शिल्पकार/कारीगर के रूप में आदर को प्राप्त नहीं करते हैं। गजधर, जो समाज की गंभीरता को मापते हैं, इसी रूप में परिचित हैं।
English Translation: Gajadhar is a beautiful word for the respectful remembrance of the builders of the pond. This word is still prevalent in some parts of Rajasthan. Who is Gajdhar? The one who holds the measure of yards is a Gajdhar. The value of the yard is used in the measurement work. Gajdhar no longer enjoys respect as a craftsman/artisan in the society carrying an iron rod of three hands size in his hand. Gajadhara, who measures the severity of society, is known in this form.
गजधराः वास्तुकाराः आसन्। कामं ग्रामीणसमाजो भवतु नागरसमाजो वा तस्य नव-निर्माणस्य सुरक्षाप्रबन्धनस्य च दायित्वं गजधरा: निभालयन्ति स्म। नगरनियोजनात् लघुनिर्माणपर्यन्तं सर्वाणि कार्याणि एतेष्वेव आधृतानि आसन्।
Hindi Translation: गजधर आर्किटेक्ट थे। चाहे ग्रामीण समुदाय हो या नगर समाज, उसके नए निर्माण की तथा सुरक्षा प्रबंधन का दायित्व गजधर निभाते थे। नगर नियोजन से लेकर छोटे स्तर के निर्माण तक की सभी गतिविधियाँ इन पर ही आधारित थीं।
English Translation: Whether it is a rural community or a city society, Gajdhar used to perform the responsibility of its new construction and security management. All activities from city planning to small-scale construction were based on Gajdhar.
ते योजनां प्रस्तुवन्ति स्म, भाविव्ययम् आकलयन्ति स्म, उपकरणभारान् सङ्गृहणन्ति स्म। प्रतिदाने ते न तद् याचन्ते स्म यद् दातुं तेषां स्वामिन: असमर्था: भवेयुः। कार्यसमाप्तौ वेतनानि अतिरिच्य गजधरेभ्यः सम्मानमपि प्रदीयते स्म। नमः एतादृशेभ्यः शिल्पिभ्यः।
Hindi Translation: वे योजना को प्रस्तुत करते थे भविष्य की ख़र्चों का अनुमान करते थे, साधनसामग्री को संग्रह करते थे। बदले में वे उन्हें (पैसे को) नहीं मांगते थे जिन्हें देने में उनके स्वामी असमर्थ हों। कार्य समाप्ति पर वेतन के अलावा गजधर के लिए सम्मान भी दिया जाता था। नमस्कार है, ऐसे शिल्पकारों के लिए।
English Translation: They used to present the plan, estimate future expenses, and collect resources. They did not ask for those (money) in return which their owners were unable to afford. At the end of the work, apart from the salary, respect was also given to the Gajdhar. Greetings to such craftsmen.
